Audience: Planners who wish to increase their ability to use financial analysis tools to better align resources on campus. Every indication is that a continued reduction in fiscal resources will be experienced throughout higher education for the foreseeable future. How do you rebalance and learn new approaches to using fiscal strategy to meet your mission? This session provides hands-on, collaborative experience in applying a multidimensional framework that integrates the analysis of key issues and stakeholder expectations, in determining the realignment of resources within alternative scenarios. Working in small groups, participants will assess complex problems in balancing program and budgetary objectives with tools that can be used immediately on their campuses. Learning Outcomes: - Utilize data to determine the program and resource implications of the economic downturn on your campus and how they affect the delivery of programs and services.
- Identify sources of information (evidence) that drive resource decison making.
- Describe organizational and committee processes/interactions and outcomes that contribute to resource planning and allocations.
- Connect evolving financial conditions with program expectations.
- Develop plans to realign resource allocations and adapt to a changing economic environment.

'Belting' Technology Users: White Belts to Black Belts (Mark Milliron)
SCUPers know the work of Mark Milliron well. He was a hit as a SCUP–42 plenary speaker (Remember the guy in the gorilla suit walking backwards through the basketball players?) and he will once again (This is brand new information!) address SCUPers in plenary session on Monday, July 12 in Minneapolis at SCUP–45.
Some may not know that he posts regularly on a Catalytic Conversations blog. This fairly recent post is about eliminating the "digital native" and "digital immigrant" labels from technology users and, instead, identifying users based on mastery levels as in the martial arts: We all know technology white belts—beginners who either want to or have to begin their instruction and are taking their first steps. They’re awkward, they make mistakes regularly, and they can be quite dangerous. Black belt martial artists will quickly tell you it’s far more dangerous to spar an untested white belt than a trained fighter with control. White belts often swing wildly and are less aware of the power of their strikes. The world is full of white belt technology users. From the hasty forwarding of obvious scam emails to posting strange comments on your Facebook wall to excitedly responding to requests for bank information from Nigerian royalty, they’re not hard to spot.

Every November, a team of SCUP leaders meet in Ann Arbor to review the many concurrent session and workshop proposals, as well as invited session suggestions, and select the sessions best suited to provide a comprehensive set of learning experiences for SCUP members at the following year's conference. Prior to this meeting, every proposal was reviewed by several SCUP members who were part of a team of 70-80 members of one of the SCUP academies. The selection weekend is heavily informed by the numerical ratings of the reviewers.
There are many more proposals, up to 5x as many, as can be accepted. Many very highly rated sessions are not accepted due to the need to present a balanced, integrated program. The photo above was taken Saturday morning, after the team had already made a pass through all the proposals. The task that morning was to review the whole and see which proposals not yet accepted would best complete the program.
